The enigmatic Saturnian moon Titan is still yielding surprising new details years after scientists first pierced its thick haze veil. The vision now emerging of Saturn's largest moon, with its giant dunes and oceanless surface, is perhaps a glimpse of Earth's desert future.

On May 12, Cassini obtained this image showing the coastline and numerous island groups of a portion of a large sea, consistent with the larger sea seen by the Cassini imaging instrument. Like other bodies of liquid seen on Titan, this feature reveals channels, islands, bays, and other features typical of terrestrial coastlines.

It's not a great picture of Jupiter, but that's not the point. The point is that the photograph was taken by NASA's Cassini spacecraft, which is currently orbiting Saturn, approximately 1.8 billion km from Jupiter. A similar picture of Earth would only light up a single pixel in Cassini's camera. [via universetoday]

Suddenly, they're everywhere, as ubiquitous as the news of global warming itself: Hybrid models. Issued mostly from Japan with the U.S. closely and Europe a bit further behind, are those defined as having "two engines, combining the power and longevity of a piston engine with the zero emission efficiency of an electric motor."

But there's something even more amazing here than new rings. Look in the upper right quadrant of the picture. See that little dot? That's Earth.

A recent study has changed our understanding of planetary atmospheres and may have implications for understanding the future of our own planet's climate. How Earth's environment changes over time is directly related to the evolution and survival of life on Earth.

Watching the full moon rise over the east-northeast horizon on Friday evening, you will probably notice a rather bright yellowish-white "star" shining sedately just above and to the moon's right. That object is not a star, however, but the planet Saturn.

A giant cloud half the size of the United States has been imaged on Saturn's moon Titan by the Cassini spacecraft. The cloud may be responsible for the material that fills the lakes discovered last year by Cassini's radar instrument.

NASA announced the winners of its contest to choose the best photograph taken by the Cassini spacecraft as it nears its second anniversary at the planet Saturn.
